O ΦΑΡΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΠΟΡΤΟΥ( IL BILIA FO)


1886 (station established 1860). Inactive since 1997(?). 59 m (194 ft) octagonal reinforced concrete, brick-faced tower with lantern and gallery, attached to 2-story keeper's house. The north (seaward) side of the tower is painted with a black and white checkerboard pattern; the rest of the tower is unpainted yellow brick; lantern painted white. A small photo is available, and the lighthouse is seen in the background of a 2007 photo. Huelse has a historic postcard image. This lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in Africa, marked the northern entrance to the Suez Canal. It was one of the first large lighthouses to be built using the relatively new technology of reinforced concrete. The French built the city of Port Said as the northern terminus of the canal, naming it for the ruler, Said Pasha, who had granted them the right to build the waterway.
